In the 1880s, a group of wealthy citrus growers, cattle ranchers and shipping magnates such as James Watrous, Alfred Swann, and William Morrison cleared land and built grand homes along today’s Bayshore Boulevard. By 1910, the area became known as Hyde Park, home to Tampa’s elite.
